Seebach, first mentioned in 859, is a district of the town of Mühlhausen. The village lies between the Unstrut river and the Hainich National Park and is only 5 km away from Mühlhausen. This provides numerous opportunities for excursions to the historic old town of Mühlhausen and the Hainich National Park. The oldest German bird protection facility - the Seebach State Ornithological Institute, which is also a branch office of the Thuringian State Institute for Environment and Geology - is of supra-regional importance and is located in the moated castle built around 1200.

The ornithological station is expected to remain closed until the end of 2023 due to renovation work.
