Visitors to the almost 1100-year-old Rolandstadt Nordhausen will find a wide range of cultural activities, shopping opportunities, numerous parks and hiking and cycling trails in the Harz Mountains and the Goldene Aue. The Roland statue on the town hall is a landmark of the town and one of the few remaining wooden Roland statues in Germany. It is impossible to imagine the Rolandstadt without the Echte Nordhäuser Doppelkorn, whose more than 500-year history is told by the traditional distillery. The Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp memorial and the museums Flohburg, Tabakspeicher, IFA-Museum and Kunsthaus Meyenburg shed light on other facets of the town's long history. All culture fans should definitely attend a performance at the more than 100-year-old Theater Nordhausen. Other monuments worth seeing in the town include the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, the Blasii Church and the Petri Tower on the former state garden show grounds.
A „rolling museum“ are the historic steam locomotives of the Harz narrow-gauge railroads, which set off on their leisurely journey up the Brocken every morning. The town of Nordhausen is surrounded by a green belt, for example the historic Hohenrode Park. The hilly town of Nordhausen is also a town of stairs, where small bronze staircase beetles often sit - each one unique.
