„Music at heart“ - this is what the former royal seat of Sondershausen with its centuries-old musical tradition stands for. The history of the town was shaped by the counts and later princes of the House of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, who set the tone in the town for around 560 years. The counts and princes not only gave Sondershausen an imposing castle surrounded by an extensive park, but also its musical tradition. The court chapel in Sondershausen has been documented since 1619. Initially, the musicians played for the counts, but as early as 1805, Prince Günther Friedrich Carl I established free public concerts on Loh Square. This makes the Loh Orchestra one of the oldest cultural orchestras in Germany and today it performs in the castle's octagon house, at the Nordhausen Theater and at the annual Thuringian Castle Festival in Sondershausen, where top-class musical theater delights audiences against the impressive backdrop of the castle courtyard.
Mining is also important for the town - 1893 marked the birth of the potash industry with the sinking of the Brügmann shaft. Today, visitors can discover the former potash mine on an exciting tour. The Possen leisure and recreation park with climbing forest, animal park, playground, giant bouncy castle landscape and the oldest half-timbered tower in Europe, the Straußberg adventure park with monkey forest and summer toboggan run and the Feuerkuppe vacation park offer numerous leisure activities for families.
