St. George's Church Schmalkalden
St. George's Church Schmalkalden
The construction of the town church of St. George began in 1413/14, incorporating parts of a Romanesque predecessor church. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Würzburg in 1500. The two different towers and the pointed ridge turret with town clock, Virgin and Grim Reaper, the Gothic sundial and the windows of the choir decorated with rich tracery are striking. Only a small part of the original stained glass windows has survived the turmoil of time. Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous of Hesse, a fascinating Renaissance prince and probably the most energetic political pioneer of the Reformation, appointed the first Protestant pastor in 1525. He was a co-founder of the Schmalkaldic League. At the most important meeting of the League in 1537, the most famous theologians of the time preached in the town church and Martin Luther presented his Schmalkaldic Articles. It is this Lutheran confessional document that was included in the Book of Concord of the Protestant Church in 1580 and on which many Protestant pastors around the world are still ordained today.
