City Church St. Mary Torgau
City Church St. Mary Torgau
The city church of St. Mary, a late Gothic hall church, determines the city silhouette of Torgau next to Hartenfels Castle. A Romanesque basilica was already mentioned on this site in the 12th century. The altarpiece "The Fourteen Helpers in Need" is an early work by Lucas Cranach the Elder. The tomb slab of Duchess Sophia of Mecklenburg was worked in the famous Vischer workshop in Nuremberg. The baroque high altar by Simonetti, the Renaissance pulpit, the Passion altar and the marble stone are other valuable pieces of furnishings. Katharina von Bora was buried in this church. The tomb slab shows her impressive portrait.
