Town church "Our dear women

With its 50-metre-high towers, the Stadtkirche or Marienkirche "Unserer lieben Frauen" is considered the tallest monument in the city and forms the center of Meiningen's old town. As the oldest church in Meiningen, it has been rebuilt many times without achieving a visible unity of design and thus combines several architectural styles. The church was initially towerless in the early Romanesque style and burned down several times.

In the 15th century, the growing parish required the construction of a larger church, which was begun in the style of French cathedrals but not completed. The last major reconstruction was carried out between 1884 and 1889, when the nave was completely renovated, the south tower was moved and architecturally adapted to the north tower and the colored tile roof was added.

In the fall of 1989, the town church served as a place for the emerging opposition to the GDR's political regime. The towers, which stand out from the cityscape, are accessible and invite you to enjoy the beautiful view of the city in the Werra Valley and the surrounding mountains in the summer months.

The Reger organ is an indispensable part of church music. The composer Max Reger was court conductor of the famous Meiningen court orchestra and composed works of his late work for this organ during his time. Sacred music, the organ summer and world music concerts are part of the choir's year-round program of events.
