Nordhausen City Park

Around 1880, the construction of a city park on Parkallee began as planned. Trees and shrubs were planted, circular paths and ponds laid out and fountains installed.

Today, the city park has become a Mecca for runners thanks to its well-maintained and level paths. A large display board provides information about the length and nature of the routes. Until the second half of the 19th century, the terrain of today's city park was a marshy floodplain of the Zorge. When the construction of new roads and residential areas began in Nordhausen, the rubble was used to build a dam to the east of the Zorge and to fill the swampy area. The resulting area was planted with fast-growing trees and shrubs. An avenue of chestnut trees was created on the embankment, which still adorns the path today.

In 1905, to mark the 100th anniversary of Friedrich Schiller's death, the park was given a Schiller bench made of granite from the Brocken. It stands in the immediate vicinity of the lower pond. Not far from it, a reformer's bench commemorates the Nordhausen reformers Justus Jonas, Michael Meyenburg and Johannes Spangenberg. Since the mid-90s of the last century, ecological land treatment has been introduced. Stone walls and piles of dead wood provide habitats for lizards, newts, toads and many other small creatures. An interesting fish population has developed in two ponds. Various animal enclosures and the duck pond attract many visitors. In total, one stag, four adult animals and one calf live in the fallow deer enclosure and one stag, two adult animals, a one-year-old female animal (narrow-bodied) and one calf live in the red deer enclosure. "The size of the two enclosures also determines the number of animals, which is exhausted with this stock. In the "petting enclosure", six wild sheep, five goats and a donkey can be visited to the delight of the children. There are also aviaries housing two collared parakeets, three goat parakeets, seven budgerigars and five quails. A large adventure playground with a giant climbing frame, trampoline, sand play area and various play stations are particularly attractive to younger guests. Here they can play, romp and climb.
