Stones of remembrance
An information leaflet from the "Würzburg Stumbling Stones" association states: "Each stone commemorates a person. Every stone honors a victim. Every stone is a reminder." These stones usually refer to the well-known Stolpersteine, which have been repeatedly laid in numerous German cities and abroad since 1996. But also those that are placed by local authorities on their own initiative to commemorate the Jewish and other victims of German National Socialism. In Schmalkalden, they were given the name "Stones of Remembrance". In order to honor, preserve and keep alive the memory of the Jewish citizens affected by the Holocaust, 34 Stones of Remembrance were placed at their places of residence and work between 2009 and 2016.
