Steinsburg Museum Römhild
Steinsburg Museum Römhild
Together with the Grosser Gleichberg, the Steinsburg Museum and nearby Steinsburg Castle form a unique ensemble of archaeological monuments. Covering an area of 68 hectares, Steinsburg Castle is the largest archaeological monument in Thuringia! It was abandoned by its former inhabitants in the last century BC. The huge complex fell into disrepair and the mountain became covered in forest. As early as the mid-19th century, the importance of the former fortified Celtic settlement was recognized and the remains of its walls were unearthed together with numerous finds during basalt mining. In 1929, the Steinsburg Museum was opened in the immediate vicinity of the site as a place of collection, research and presentation specifically for these Celtic remains.
