Suhl Observatory and Planetarium
Suhl Observatory and Planetarium
That's why it's so far away...
The Suhl Observatory is located on a central hill above the city center, on the Hoheloh, and is still very popular with stargazers and those who want to become one almost 60 years after it was founded. This is primarily due to the great events organized by Sternenfreunde e.V., which are particularly popular with young explorers. Under the impressive 8m dome of the planetarium, listeners can learn all kinds of interesting facts about the movements in the sky, the meaning of the constellations and magical things about the moon.
In the summer months, the one-hour program "The current starry sky" is particularly popular, in which the current course of the stars is observed through a telescope every Wednesday at 4 p.m., weather permitting. All other planetarium shows on changing themes usually take place on the second and last Saturday of the month at 3 pm. Special demonstrations can be offered for registered groups by prior arrangement.
In addition, a small exhibition explains the history of astronomy and important discoveries in space travel, while scale models of planets and space models sharpen the understanding of the phenomena in space. In addition to souvenirs, specialist literature can also be purchased in the Astro-Shop.
Tip: On summery days, it's worth taking a detour to the Hoheloh anyway. When the weather is nice, you can spend time outdoors up here and enjoy wonderful views of the city of Suhl and the southern slopes of the Thuringian Forest.
