Südharz OT Stolberg (Harz)

Stolberg, a district of the municipality of Südharz, impresses with around 400 medieval half-timbered houses, narrow winding alleyways and the castle, which can be seen from afar and towers above the town. This unique cultural heritage, with buildings dating back over six centuries, made Stolberg the first town in Germany to be awarded the title of "Historic European Town" and the town is the starting point of the German Half-Timbered Road.

Stolberg Castle is the cradle of the Orange family. The Dutch royal family is closely linked to the history of northern and central Germany - Juliana of Stolberg and Wernigerode, ancestress of the Orange family, was born and raised at Stolberg Castle in 1506. Until the late Middle Ages, the town was shaped by mining and the minting trade. Witnesses of historical architecture include the town hall, built in 1452, which has no internal stairs and can only be reached from one floor to the next via a staircase on the outside, the Renaissance half-timbered house Alte Münze (Old Mint) from 1535 with its oriel turrets and red fan ornaments, which today houses a local history museum with a coin workshop, the Altes Bürgerhaus museum, the town church of St. Martini, the early Gothic Rittertor (Knights' Gate) and the medieval Saigerturm tower. A well-known resident also made a name for himself in the course of history: The peasant leader Thomas Müntzer was born in Stolberg, there were several uprisings here during the Reformation and Martin Luther preached in the town church of St. Martini in 1525.

With its scenic valley location and the surrounding beech forests, the half-timbered town of Stolberg is also an ideal destination for hikers and nature lovers, for example to the 125-year-old Josephskreuz on the Großer Auerberg near Stolberg, the world's largest iron double cross at 38 meters. There are numerous accommodation and catering options to suit every taste.
