Suhl

Suhl, the largest city in southern Thuringia, the most natural city in Thuringia and the largest "state-approved resort" in Germany, is the economic and administrative center of the region. It owes its unique selling point as a "weapons town" to the traditional craftsmanship that has been practiced here for several centuries. In addition to the historic mining industry, there were many gunsmith and engraving companies. Today, the history of hunting and sporting weapon production is presented in the "Weapons Museum". World and European Championships as well as World Cups at the International Shooting Sports Center Suhl still carry the good reputation as a host city all over the world. The over one-hundred-year-old tradition of vehicle construction in Suhl is on display in the "Vehicle Museum" in the Congress Centrum Suhl (CCS) and is increasingly attracting many classic car enthusiasts to the city. The visitor mine "Schwarzer Crux" is a reminder of the historical iron ore mining in the region. Probably the best-known restaurant in Suhl is the "Waffenschmied", which was the inspiration for the successful film "Sushi in Suhl". Its location on the south-western slope of the Thuringian Forest also offers a wide range of opportunities for nature lovers: over 300 km of hiking trails meander through the Thuringian Forest around the city in the countryside, with the legendary Rennsteig trail in the immediate vicinity. Herbert Roth's "Rennsteiglied" is regarded as the secret anthem of Thuringia. In winter, ski enthusiasts can enjoy over 100 kilometers of groomed ski trails and cross-country ski tracks in Suhl and the surrounding area. With "Oh Tannenbaum" by Suhl native Dr. Ernst Anschütz, Suhl is on everyone's lips millions of times around the world every Christmas.
