Friedrich Francke" tannery - a technical monument

Experience the centuries-old tradition of tanning and shoemaking.

In Weida, the Tanners and shoemakers a long tradition. The tannery was founded in 1844 by Johann Friedrich Franke and operated until 1992. In 2001, the town took over the building and continues to run it as a technical monument. Visitors to this industrial monument of a special kind are immersed in the 19th century. Some of the tanning pits are still full and the old machines are still working. During the guided tours, the smell of leather and tan still lingers, the belts flutter to drive the bark crusher, leather roller and steam engine, you can experience how hard the tanner's work was and how many steps were necessary to produce durable sole leather from a piece of cattle hide.
