Thalbürgel

Thalbürgel is a district of the Pottery town Bürgel in the Saale-Holzland district and lies on the edge of the landscape conservation area Middle Saale Valley in the valley of the tracks. East of Jena The town is easily accessible via the Bundesstraße 7.

The village was founded in the 12th century by a Benedictine monastery was created. Surrounded by magnificent old lime trees, the Romanesque monastery church of St. Mary and St. George still dominates the townscape today and is one of the most important sacred monuments in Thuringia. With its excellent acoustics, the church serves as a concert hall for the Thalbürgel church summer. In the immediate vicinity of the church are the former farm buildings of the monastery complex, the Interest storage and the monastery barn. The only completely preserved secular building of the former monastery, the Zinsspeicher, is now home to a Museum of local historywhich houses a unique collection of village and small-town life from the last 200 years.

The three Monastery pondswhich were used by the monks for fish farming, today offer the villagers and visitors a wonderful oasis of peace and relaxation. Other sights include the old Village fountain on the Bornberg, the historic dance floor in Gniebsdorf under the lime trees and the Valley mill as a "technical showpiece" of a former watermill.

The village is also easily accessible via numerous signposted hiking and cycling trails. For example, the approx. 14 km long Jena-Thalbürgel church cycle path the monastery church with the Jena City Church of St. Michael.
