The zoo of large animals is located in the north of the state capital Erfurt on the Red Mountain and is the third largest scientifically managed zoo in Germany, covering almost 63 hectares. The special features of the zoo are the many generously designed enclosures, which are modeled on the animals' natural habitat. The communal keeping of different animal species is becoming increasingly important. Some enclosures are even accessible so that visitors can come face to face with the animals. Thüringer Zoopark Erfurt is also strongly committed to species conservation and participates in breeding programs for endangered species. The zoo restaurant, a bistro and other snack stands cater for visitors' physical well-being.
