The district of Tunzenhausen is located to the west of the town center of Sömmerda, directly on the B176 federal road. The name Tunzenhausen originated from the proper name Tunzo and originally referred to the settlement - the Tunzo house.
The former manor of Tunzenhausen had a total agricultural area of 765 acres. The majority of the population of Tunzenhausen worked as farm laborers on this estate. In 1946, the lands of the manor were divided up and transferred to land-poor farmers and also to factory workers.
Famous sons of the district are Johann Jacob Leitzmann and Prof. Dr. Carl Schleusing.
Since 2007, the town of Sömmerda has been gradually renovating the former manor house in Tunzenhausen. The listed building has now become a community center for the district's clubs and its residents. The "Altes Gutshaus" (Old Manor House) support association with committed citizens from Tunzenhausen accompanied the renovation and organizes numerous cultural events in the manor house every year.
A long-cherished wish of the inhabitants of the district came true in November 2007. The Central Thuringia Road Construction Office and the town of Sömmerda built a two-kilometre cycle and footpath from Tunzenhausen to Sömmerda along the busy main road. This is very popular - and not just with the locals.
