The Ulster spring is the source of the most important Werra tributary from the Rhön region and is located close to the Red Moor.
The Ulster Spring, also known as the Gold Spring, is the source of the most important Werra tributary from the Rhön region. The river rises at approx. 818 m above sea level between the Wasserkuppen massif and the Lange Rhön on the eastern side. Precipitation seeps into the basalt blankets of the Hohe Rhön and is dammed by impermeable layers under or between the fissured basalt blankets and forced to flow out at the edges. The basalt blankets form an aquifer here, from whose groundwater bed (= groundwater thaw) the groundwater stored in the basalts emerges in the captured Ulster spring.
It is located on the two premium hiking trails "THE HOCHRHÖNER" and Extra tour "Red Moor" an.
