Ummerstadt

Smallest town in Thuringia

Ummerstadt, the smallest town in Thuringia and the second smallest town in Germany, is located in the southernmost corner of the Heldburger Unterland, close to the former inner-German border. Ummerstadt was first mentioned in 837. The well-preserved early Romanesque fortified church with a front tower and walls "St. Andreas auf dem Berg" dates back to this time. Ummerstadt was granted town rights in 1394. Ummerstadt experienced its heyday after the Thirty Years' War thanks to the pottery trade, which was known far beyond the borders of Thuringia. This brought great wealth to the town, which can still be seen today in the half-timbered town houses on the market square and the cattle market. The entire historic old town was placed under protection as an area monument in 1990 and formed the backdrop for the movie "Luther".

Regular guided tours of the town include a visit to the baroque parish church of St. Bartholomew, the communal brewery built in 1861 and still in its original state, and the local history museum on Luther's Hill, which provides an insight into the cultural history of the region, particularly through the typical Ummerstadt pottery.

The gently undulating landscape with its dense deciduous forests, rare orchards and near-natural streams offers a well-signposted network of hiking trails for exciting excursions. By integrating the Green Belt and the outposts of the Zweiländermuseum Rodachtal in Streufdorf, visitors can discover many interesting historical connections from the time when Germany was divided. The village of Erlebach with its memorial and the Ummerstadt cross can be visited. Since 2005, Ummerstadt has been offering nature tours of the Green Belt and the historic orchards, whose terraces date back to the time of Charlemagne. These tours are also specially tailored to families and children. Afterwards, you are invited to stop off at one of the cozy restaurants. You will then have the opportunity to taste the juice made from the orchards' own apples and the country beer brewed twice a year.
