In 1564, succession led to the division of the rule of the Prussians into Upper and Lower Greiz. A Renaissance building was erected in the center of the town as a residence for the newly created Lower Greiz line, today the „Lower Castle“. A devastating town fire in 1802 did not spare the Lower Castle either. It was rebuilt in a strict neoclassical style until 1809. The state rooms were decorated with valuable stucco work. The banqueting hall - now the White Hall - became a masterpiece. The last structural extension took place in 1884/85. The south wing, the so-called Ida-Palais, was added with further representative rooms and the onion dome. The interior of the dome in the staircase depicts the 12 months. Since 1929, the rooms of the Lower Palace, the „Belle Etage“, have housed a museum. Today, one of the side wings also houses the „Greizer Textil - Vom Handwerk bis zur Industrie“ (Greiz Textiles - From Craft to Industry) exhibition workshop as a reminder of Greiz's textile history. The Greiz Tourist Information Office, the music school and a restaurant are also located in the Lower Castle.
