Untermühle Freienorla
Untermühle Freienorla
The watermill "Untermühle" in Freienorla was mentioned as early as 1176, was run as a lower mill with a tavern from 1457, worked as a trading mill between Jena and Pößneck after being rebuilt in 1896 and is the last of the numerous grinding, beating, oil and cutting mills operated by the Orla. The driving wheel is over 5 meters high and 2 meters wide, making it one of the largest remaining of its kind in Thuringia. The Freienorla lower mill, with its original and fully functional mill equipment, is now a technical museum and has been continually improved and renovated.
