Ursuline convent and church
Ursuline convent and church
The Ursuline Convent in the center of Erfurt is the only remaining convent in the Thuringian capital alongside the Augustinian Convent. The Romanesque church and convent building were built in 1136 and inhabited by Augustinian nuns until 1198. It was then taken over by Magdalene nuns until 1667, when Ursuline nuns took over the almost empty convent. From there, they set themselves the task of educating children and adults, which they did for 350 years. Today, the convent sees its function as providing opportunities for people seeking silence, prayer and conversation. The monastery was last renovated between 2004 and 2008, for which it was awarded the Thuringian Monument Protection Prize.
The Ursuline convent and church will remain closed until the end of 2023 due to construction work.
