Sanctuary of the Annunciation
Sanctuary of the Annunciation
The idyllically situated church of the Annunciation has been a destination for centuries for people who want to reflect and renew their faith here, or who are looking for comfort and confidence, strength and new hope. Numerous pilgrimages to "Maria in der Wiese" take place every year. At the end of the pilgrimage year, a rosary devotion with a candlelight procession is celebrated at the end of October. Many other pilgrimages take place in between.
The story:
The field church built in 1710 and a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary were destroyed by a massive flood in 1886. The foundation stone for the current pilgrimage church was laid in 1887. In 1889, Bishop Wilhelm von Hildesheim performed the solemn consecration. The sandstone building is a Romanesque church with a transept, semi-circular apse and tower in front of the nave. The nave is supported by two rows of four columns. The original interior was designed in neo-Gothic style. The interior of the pilgrimage church was completely redesigned in 1966.
Restoration work has been carried out in the pilgrimage church since 2005. The uncovering of the historical paintings was completed in 2019. The ornamentation in the church offers a great variety and was created by the Duderstadt church painter Krumpiepen. The Krell organ was also renovated with the help of many small donations. The restoration of the entrance area of the church and the historic swing door has been completed.
