Wartburg Castle
Wartburg Castle
Over 900 years old, the world-famous Wartburg Castle towers over the town of Eisenach, visible from afar. According to legend, Louis the Knight is said to have announced the founding of Wartburg Castle with the following words: „Wait! Mountain, you shall become a castle for me!“
It is not only a castle par excellence, but also a witness to German history. Wartburg Castle tells of the courtly art of the Middle Ages. St. Elisabeth of Thuringia lived and worked here. Martin Luther translated the New Testament. The parlor in the castle bailiwick - the reformer's authentic living and working space from May 1521 to March of the following year and the destination of countless „pilgrims“ for centuries - can also be considered the birthplace of the Luther Bible and our modern language. The festival of the German fraternities was held at Wartburg Castle and Wagner wrote the romantic opera „Tannhäuser“. All this still gives Wartburg Castle its special attraction and charm today.
