The Protestant village church in Schaala is one of the most perfect fortified churches in Thuringia; its oldest part has its roots in the Romanesque period and dates back to the 12th century or earlier. The rectangular apse with its east window was added in the Gothic period (around 1300) and the tower was built on top. The tin tower is equipped with embrasures.
The church took on its present form in 1575 with the addition of the nave, the decorative pewter wreath and the spire of the tower. A plastered, pointed-arched wooden barrel vault arches over the simple nave with two-storey galleries. The late Gothic carved winged altar from a Saalfeld school (around 1500) is particularly striking. The organ, dating from 1742, has been preserved almost in its original state in terms of work, facade and tuning.
