The village, located southwest of Uhlstädt on the Saale (180 m above sea level, 272 inhabitants), first mentioned in a document in 1083 as Wizne, used to live, like the other villages directly on the river, mainly from fishing and rafting in addition to agriculture.

There is a hotel and several restaurants in the village.

The Klinik an der Weißenburg is the most important institution in the town and, with around 120 employees, is also the largest employer in the municipality of Uhlstädt-Kirchhasel. The modern new clinic building (rehabilitation clinic for oncology and rheumatology, acute clinic for rheumatology) with more than 200 beds was built in 1995/96 in the immediate vicinity of the Weißenburg, which towers 40 m above the Saale. The Weißenburg, the oldest parts of which date back to the 13th century, was founded by the Counts of Orlamünde and was rebuilt in 1792 after a devastating fire and later remodeled several times.

In 1501, Friedrich Thun zu Oberitz came into possession of the Weißenburg. Knighted before the Peasants' War, Friedrich, now Thun zur Weißenburg, is said to have accompanied Martin Luther to the Reichstag in Worms and also orchestrated his stay at Wartburg Castle. The von Lengefelds later came into possession of the Weißenburg, but had to sell it in 1761. The von Lengefelds, relatives of Charlotte von Lengefeld, who later became the wife of Friedrich von Schiller, were the last feudal lords from a Thuringian noble family to leave Weissenburg Castle.

In 1777, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who had hiked over from Kochberg, stayed at Weißenburg, where he drew the gate ensemble, among other things, and wrote to Frau von Stein: "After dinner, Kästner and the two of us went to Weißenburg, where there is a wonderful area and some perfectly beautiful places....". There is hardly anything to add to this.
