Werra bridge in the town of Creuzburg

With its seven arches, the Creuzburg Werra Bridge is the oldest natural stone bridge north of the River Main. The stone bridge was built by Landgrave Ludwig IV in 1223. From time immemorial, the military and trade route coming from the Rhine via Meschede and Kassel, the "Lange Hessen", crossed the Werra here at Creuzburg and led into Thuringia. At that time, Hesse belonged to the Landgraviate of Thuringia. A bridge, here at this point, made it possible to control and influence trade and traffic, as this was the only safe Werra crossing far and wide. Precisely because of its strategically important location, Creuzburg suffered a great deal and was burned to the ground several times. The bridge was also destroyed during the Second World War. In 1986, a new concrete bridge was built to meet modern traffic requirements. The old Werra Bridge and the Liborius Chapel are an impressive testimony to medieval architecture.
