Werraquelle
Werraquelle
Here, at an altitude of almost 800 m above sea level, begins the journey of one of the most important and most beautiful rivers in Germany.
The Werra begins its almost 300 km journey here before joining the Fulda at Hannoversch Münden to form the Weser and finally flowing into the North Sea at Bremerhaven.
The spring at the foot of the Eselsberg near Fehrenbach was enclosed in 1897 and ceremoniously inaugurated on August 14 of the following year. It is also known as the Schröder's spring socket according to master forester Georg Schröder from neighboring Heubach. The masonry work was carried out at the time by Elias Traut from Fehrenbach. Both gentlemen are immortalized today with commemorative plaques on the setting.
Since then, the water flows tirelessly through the jaws of a lion's head. In 2006, the spring was extensively renovated.
By the way, from the source also comes the Baptismal waterwhich was used for the commissioning of the Bombardier CityLiner aircraft CRJ 700 "Eschwege".
There is a small, cozy inn right next to the Werra spring that invites you to take a break. In addition to Thuringian specialties and home-baked cakes, you will also be served the elixir of life in the form of the "Werraquelltröpfchen".
