Gehlberg Weather Museum
Gehlberg Weather Museum
Weather observation on Thuringia's highest peaks has a long tradition. Duke Ernst II of Saxony, Coburg and Gotha set up a station on the Schneekopf as early as 1772. It later burned down. The locations of the post-war stations are close to the Schmücke on the Rennsteig.
The museum recalls the development of meteorology, focuses on weather forecasting by plants and animals, electrical weather phenomena (lightning, sferics, northern lights), Thuringian weather phenomena and typical weather wisdom. It also displays a variety of meteorological instruments.
The thunderstorm simulation is also impressive.
