Wieland Monument Weimar
Wieland Monument Weimar
Christoph Martin Wieland (1733-1813), poet and editor of the journal "Der teutsche Merkur", was appointed by Duchess Anna Amalia as a prince's tutor in 1772 - an important step in the development of Weimar as a literary and cultural center. The bronze statue (designed by Hanns Gasser) shows Wieland at around the age of 50 with his frock coat open, his right hand raised in conversation and the "Oberon" in his left hand. The monument was inaugurated during the celebrations for Carl August's 100th birthday.
