Wingerode, an Eichsfeld village with 1,278 (12/04) inhabitants, situated in the beautiful Leine valley between oak and beech forests, was able to look back on its first documented mention 850 years ago in 1996.
The original document of the first mention of Wingerode is kept in the Hessian State Archives in Marburg. The document was issued in Heiligenstadt on September 24, 1146, in which Archbishop Henry the First of Mainz confirmed various donations to the Benedictine convent of Lippoldsberg (Hesse) by Archbishop Adalbert the First of Mainz and by Noble Adelheid, stepdaughter of Count Lampert the First of Gräfentonna, who had joined the convent. On the original document, 52 cm wide and 50 cm high, on which the throne seal of Archbishop Heinrich of Mainz is imprinted, the place names are written differently, namely Wingerode : Wichelderothe.
