One of the oldest log houses in Thuringia and also the oldest house in Triebes was built in 1617 during the Thirty Years' War.

There are documents attesting to the sale of the property to Friedrich August Winkelmann on October 20, 1869. The son of the owner family Winkelmann learned the trade of wheelwright and lived in Triebes until 1950. His wheelwright's workshop and the history of this listed house are still remembered by many of the older inhabitants of Triebes.

The association "Regionales Zentrum für Umweltbildung und Naturschutz Triebes e.V." was founded in 1999 together with the BUND district association of Greiz and the town of Triebes. The Winkelmann House was opened to the public for the first time on "Open Monument Day" in 2000. Since then, construction and renovation work has been ongoing. Experts are on hand to provide advice and assistance, and even the garden has been prepared by members of the association, schoolchildren and friends of the preservation society. Today, the house is a cultural meeting place for citizens.
