Winter sports area Scheibe-Alsbach
The excellently developed network of ski trails in the Rennsteig town of Neuhaus am Rennweg also leads to the present-day district of Scheibe-Alsbach, which is known as the gateway to the wild and romantic Schwarzatal valley. At an altitude of 717 m, the Schwarza has its source in one of the deepest crevice springs in Europe. Germanic settlers named the water "Suarzaha", which appears dark due to the slate scree and shadows on the banks of the rocky valley. Scheibe-Alsbach stretches southwards for 1.5 km up to the Rennsteig and borders directly on the Steinheid/Limbach district.
Extensive spruce forests surround the village, which lies in a gentle, almost disc-shaped basin through which the Schwarza flows. This appearance certainly contributed to the village's name. A popular destination for winter hikers is the Schwarza reservoir nestled in the forest, which was awarded the title of the cleanest drinking water reservoir in Germany in 1997. For winter sports enthusiasts, a trip to the biathlon facility "Am Rußtiegel", which is located in the Scheibe-Alsbach district and is run by the dedicated Scheibe-Alsbach winter sports club, is certainly worthwhile.
