The village, which was first mentioned in a document in 1406, owes its name to the mining of iron ore "Schmiede auf dem Feld". The mining museum, visitor mine and weekly local hikes tell of its history. Today, tourism and crafts characterize the commercial profile of the village. Schmiedefeld is proud to be the destination of Europe's largest cross-country race, the GutsMuths-Rennsteiglauf, which brings together more than ten thousand popular sports enthusiasts of all ages across various running and hiking routes every year. Schmiedefeld, located in the UNESCO Thuringian Forest Biosphere Reserve, is a summer hiking paradise and a winter Eldorado.

For active pursuits, Schmiedefeld has numerous well-signposted hiking trails and a Nordic activity center. But winter also has its charms. The winter world on the "Großer Eisenberg" (908 m) has a double T-bar lift with snowmaking, floodlights and FUN elements. The descent is approx. 1100 m.

For cross-country skiing enthusiasts, the resort offers many kilometers of cross-country ski trails and ski hiking paths. Both for winter hikers who prefer leisurely tours and for experienced skiers looking for a challenge. Ski and snowboard school, toboggan slope and toboggan complete the winter sports offer. All sports equipment can be hired.
