Lyonel Feininger was the first master to be appointed to the Bauhaus, which was founded in 1919. Until 1925, he and his family lived in the right-hand side of the semi-detached house, which is privately owned. His paintings of village churches and villages in the Weimar region, which he repeatedly sketched between 1906 and 1937, have become famous. Many of his motifs are exhibited in internationally renowned museums, including the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz and the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle.
