Drawing well in Kleinwenkheim

Two historic draw wells still exist in the Münnerstadt district Kleinwenkheim. Their existence once earned the municipality the nickname „Puszta village“. Today, such fountains are more commonly seen in pictures from Hungary. Two of these fountains have survived because they are two mementos from the good old days for the locals.

The draw wells are on the list of monuments and are dated to the 18th or 19th century. There is an entry about the wells in the Kleinwenkheim chronicle by Wendelin Volk from 1988. In 1835, five such draw wells were counted in Kleinwenkheim. They bore the names Vells-Brünn, im Eck, Kirchbrünn, Gassenbrünn and Hennersbrünn. „The municipality did not comply with the royal government's request to convert these draw wells into pumping wells,“ the chronicle states. The reason for this was that they had already had bad experiences with a pump well in terms of water quality and also believed that a draw well could supply water more quickly in the event of a fire. With the help of the long swinging tree, a bucket of water could be lowered into the well and then filled with water and transported to the top.

Until the final completion of the water pipeline in 1971, the people of Kleinwenkheim were supplied with water from house and farm wells, and some still had a Pustza well, according to the chronicle. In 1956, the local council decided to install a Schwengel pump on the parish well near the vicarage to draw water instead of „the previous, somewhat difficult to operate small Pustza system“. In October 1963, the committee decided to plan a central water supply. Three years later, the connection to the Münnerstadt water supply was approved. According to the chronicle, the earthworks for the central water pipeline reached Kleinwenkheim in 1969.

The fountains have long since ceased to serve as water dispensers. Today they are merely an ornamental feature of the town. They are always festively decorated before Easter.
