Milkyard monument
Milkyard monument
A cooperative project of 80 dairy farmers commissioned the local architect Martin Schwarz to build a modern dairy. He carried out this commission in 1928/29 in an astonishingly social, functional, lighting and not least aesthetic manner. Today, the Arnstadt dairy farm is a classic modernist monument.
Martin Schwarz designed the dairy under the influence of the Bauhaus design language: the cubic character of the building, the absence of any ornamentation with the exception of an elongated lettering and the play of colors of the hard-fired clinker brick are just some of the aspects that make the Milchhof a jewel of Thuringian modernism. And this despite the fact that Martin Schwarz never studied or taught at the Weimar University.
The Milchhof Arnstadt is thus once again proof that the ideas of modernism also affected and influenced architects and artists outside the immediate sphere of influence of the Bauhaus.
