Blankenburger Tor – Historisches Stadttor Saalfeld
Blankenburger Tor – Historisches Stadttor Saalfeld
Situated in the northern section of the city wall, the Blankenburg Gate appears as early as 1372 as "Blankenberg Gate" in old documentary records of the city's history. The Blankenburg Gate and the Upper Gate formed the important passages of the city in the course of the old trade route. Blankenburg Street, which opens here, still represents the trade in the town. Its course corresponds to that of the old imperial road. Remarkable are the use of the gate as a bathhouse (mentioned in 1380) and the shooting house in the 15th century. Both were located directly at the gate and were often in the focus of public interest. However, spared from the city fires, the tower was reduced to two floors in the 18th century due to dilapidation and received the Baroque hood. Due to the increasing trade traffic, in the 19th century the narrow pointed arch passage of the gate was replaced by an enlarged round arch passage.
