Rocks were a completely new design element in the garden art of the late 18th century. While threatening nature had previously only been presented in a strict frame - if at all - the magnificent rock was now staged as a sublime element in the garden. It overwhelmed and elevated the viewer and stood for mountains and high mountains as new spaces for experiencing nature. The deliberately designed, rocky landscape was as reminiscent of Chinese paintings as it was of an Alpine panorama. The flower basket rock with griffin bench is an example of the early phase of the sentimental and sensitive design of the landscape garden. The monument was created in 1802 under Duke Georg I as a memorial to his deceased mother Charlotte Amalie von Sachsen-Meiningen. The 18-metre-high rock needle was given a small walk-on platform with a large stone flower basket at the top. A griffin bench with a bust of Charlotte Amalie was erected in the grotto-like vault at the foot of the rock.
