The old windmill stands in the middle of a field and the course of the small Tonna stream meanders quietly past. Pure romance on the Thuringian farmland.

The base of the mill (1834) is an almost square trestle, hence the name. Originally located in Hoheneggelsen (Lower Saxony), it was moved to the outskirts of Ballstädt in 1933. It was still in operation until 1960 for the production of animal feed. Today, the windmill is a protected cultural monument in the district of Gotha. Its four wings are striking, two of them with full blinds and two with doors. The miller's parlor was housed in its bay window. The Ballstadt mill was restored between 1982 and 1984. It is a protected cultural monument of the district of Gotha and is fully functional.
