Botanical Garden
Whether palm house or herb garden, cacti or carnivorous plants - there is something to discover here at any time of year!
The Botanical Garden in Jena is a must for plant lovers and nature enthusiasts! Where else can you find such an attractive oasis so close to the city center? Around 10,000 plant species grow on the 4.5-hectare site. Jena's botanical garden is the second oldest in Germany. Founded in 1586 as a medicinal herb garden, it owes its current layout to Goethe's involvement. The famous poet and naturalist is commemorated by a 200-year-old gingko tree, whose leaves glow bright yellow in the fall. Alpinum, tropical plants, useful and medicinal plants - every themed area of the Jena Botanical Garden has its own charm. In the Victoria House, which was built especially for the famous Amazon water lily, the colorful butterflies flying around delight children and adults alike. Exhibitions and events attract interested visitors all year round. Highlights such as the Easter egg hunt or the plant rarity fair in June are real crowd pullers. A visit is worthwhile at any time of year!
