Bruchstedt was first mentioned in the Hersfeld property register Brevarium santi Lulli in 775. For several centuries, Bruchstedt belonged to the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and was annexed to the Kingdom of Prussia on June 15, 1816 through an exchange agreement.

The very old and dilapidated "Nikolaikirche" was demolished on 05.03.1847. However, the tower was preserved. The foundation stone for the new church was laid on 12.04.1847 and the consecration of the completed church took place on 25.11.1847. It bears the name "Johanneskirche". The church was partially renovated between 2009 and 2016. From 1920 to 1967, our village was connected to the Bad Langensalza - Haussömmern railroad line. Today, the former railroad embankment is used as a cycle path and is part of the K2.

In 1950, the community became sadly famous. The village was hit by a devastating storm on 23.05.1950 and 60 % were destroyed. Eight people lost their lives. In a spectacular relief operation by the GDR at the time, the village was rebuilt in just 50 days. In addition to the reconstruction of the farmsteads, a cultural center, a new school and a kindergarten were built. The cultural center with its beautiful large hall is now a listed building. In recent years, the school and kindergarten have been converted into a support center for mentally handicapped children and young people.

Every year on May 23, the eight victims of the flood disaster are commemorated in a memorial ceremony and a church service. Every year, the people of Bruchstedt and their guests celebrate the unprecedented relief effort with the reconstruction festival.

The annual motocross events on the race track on the eastern edge of the town have a long tradition.
