Wysburg castle ruins

... popularly known as Altes Schloß, Hohe Waldsburg or Hunnenburg, is located in the northern foothills of the Franconian Forest or the Thuringian Slate Mountains, approx. 1.5 km north of the small village of Weisbach near Remptendorf in the Saale-Orla district. It has always aroused the interest of local historians, especially as a legend mentions the destruction of the robber baron's castle. It is therefore not surprising that various surveys and small-scale excavations were carried out in the first third of the 20th century. In addition, the castle area was used as a quarry by the local inhabitants and thus lost a large part of its substance. In 1985, when the first scientific excavations were carried out by the then Museum of Prehistory and Early History of Thuringia, hardly any masonry was visible above ground. There is a museum about the castle ruins in Weisbach, which is located on the village green. On the outskirts of the village on the way to the castle is a model of a medieval slingshot, which can also be demonstrated by appointment. There is a classroom on the castle grounds, which can be used by schools at any time.
