Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Lady Steinheid
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Lady Steinheid
The first church in the former gold mining community of Steinheid was consecrated in 1507. Steinheid initially belonged to the parish of Schalkau and the church was located near the market square. It became an independent parish in 1532.
A replacement building for the dilapidated church was built on the road to Steinach between 1789 and 1792 in the style of the reformed church, today's Catholic church, "St. Leopold", in Hildburghausen. Duke Georg I covered half of the building costs, the other half was covered by donations. The Liebfrauenkirche was consecrated in 1792. However, the nave had to be demolished as early as 1832 due to massive structural damage. It was rebuilt from 1833 to 1835, this time using solid construction methods, with the exception of the foundation walls and the tower. The plans were drawn up by the ducal building inspector Johann Georg Buck.
