Goethe City Museum Ilmenau
Goethe City Museum Ilmenau
The GoetheStadtMuseum in the historic Amtshaus sees itself as a lively place of exchange between the past and the future. In 1616, Countess Sophie von Henneberg had the house built as a widow's residence. After the town fire in 1752, it was rebuilt for the ducal family according to the plans of baroque master builder Krohne. In the corner room on the first floor, you can admire the view of the market and the stucco ceiling while standing on the same floorboards as Goethe did back then. The museum focuses on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's work as a poet, civil servant and naturalist in Ilmenau.
