Harztor OT Neustadt/Harz
The state-approved climatic health resort of Neustadt/Harz is located in the heart of the Südharz nature park. Tourism and spa treatments have been a feature of the town since the 19th century. It has been a climatic health resort since 1890 and is now also recognized as a climatic health resort. Outpatient cures are offered in particular for patients with chronic lung diseases. The ruins of Hohnstein Castle tower high above the town. It was around 1120 when the Hohnstein family of counts, once an influential noble family in Thuringia, had their ancestral castle built on a mountain spur. A settlement developed at the foot of the castle hill, which was first mentioned in a document as "Novenstadt" in 1372. The small market town developed rapidly, so that in 1485 the town was allowed to build a town hall and erect a statue of Roland as a symbol of jurisdiction. The statue of Roland still stands today at the Ratskeller in Neustadt - like the Roland in neighboring Nordhausen, the figure is also made of oak and dates from 1730, after its predecessor was burned down. A ruin of the castle still stands today, which is a popular excursion destination with a castle inn, observation tower and other relics. With its network of paths, Neustadt offers good conditions for hikers and cyclists. For example, the Südharzer Dampflok Steig quality hiking trail leads directly through the town, while the Karst hiking trail, which has also won an award, the Volksbank Arena Harz with an extensive network of mountain bike trails and the Harz circular cycle path are also nearby. The golf park and the forest swimming pool also invite you to exercise in the fresh air. The Südharz Nature Park presents the special features of the flora and fauna in a new exhibition in the information center. Guests can find the accommodation they want in hotels, guesthouses and vacation apartments.
