The municipality Henfstädt is located in the westernmost part of the district of Hildburghausen, in the immediate vicinity of the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen, im Werratal. The town, which extends in an east-west direction, is bordered to the north and north-west by the Werra river. The B 89, which runs from Sonneberg via Hildburghausen to Meiningen, passes Henfstädt in the north. The nearest train station is 3 km away in Themar on the Meiningen-Hildburghausen-Sonneberg line.
The village was first mentioned in a document in 914.
