Herressen Promenade
The "green oasis" of Apolda - a town in Weimarer Land
The Herressan promenade
The Herressener Promenade garden monument is located just a few minutes from the market square. It was laid out at the end of the 19th century as a "green oasis" for the people of Apolda "for walking on dust-free paths". The Herressener Promenade was created over 100 years ago in several stages with the help of the Grand Ducal Saxon-Weimar court gardener and garden inspector Otto Ludwig Paul August Sckell (1861-1948) from the famous Sckell horticultural family.
The elongated site was the backdrop for the 4th Thuringian State Garden Show Blütezeit Apolda in 2017 and is divided into three areas following the thorough renovation:
- the urban Lohteich with city terrace
- the naturally designed peace pond with water lily balcony
- the festival meadow
These are connected by a main path running around the perimeter and various smaller paths. Characteristic are the avenues with old trees that form a natural spatial boundary along the long sides. The border and at the same time the transition between the inner city is formed by Adolf-Aber-Straße on one side and the approx. 8-metre-high lawn sculpture on the other in the direction of Herressen.
Varied experiences
Today, the 15-hectare Herressener Promenade impresses with its old trees and, in the sense of a landscape park, with exciting visual axes between shady avenues of trees, sunny meadows with solitary trees and the two ponds. Relax on one of the floating islands or take a boat trip across the Lohteich in summer.
