Heyerode

The Eichsfeld municipality of Heyerode is located in the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park in the Unstrut-Hainich district of Thuringia. The densely wooded area with predominantly beech trees ensures a healthy climate with very good air quality. Heyerode as a small center is considered a soft location for living and tourism. A large number of small businesses ensure a balanced infrastructure. Half-timbered houses dominate the town center.

The municipality of Neuenkirchen in northern Münsterland is Heyerode's partner municipality. On the eastern edge of the village is the historic Grenzhaus, through the first floor of which the road runs. Originally, this part of the building was probably a gate tower. Today it is privately owned and serves as a studio for a landscape painter.

Heyerode has a relatively self-contained ensemble of half-timbered houses and courtyards. One of the well-kept historical buildings houses the Heyerode Heimatstube. Here you will find an exhibition depicting the working and living conditions of past decades. There are two churches in the village.

The Obermühle mill (in operation until the 1960s) and the Untermühle mill (in operation until 1938), which can be traced back to 1548, are located on the Lempertsbach stream on the border with Hallungen and are representative half-timbered buildings. At the upper mill, which is a designated technical monument, you can still see the top-shaft mill wheel. Above the mill, on a mountain spur sloping down to the west, are the remains of the Sommerstein hill fort. The highest elevation is 460 m above sea level. Winter sports, cycling and hiking are all possible here. At the "Alter Bahnhof" country inn in Heyerode, various cross-country ski trails of different lengths and difficulties are groomed in winter. Cross-country skis and snowshoes are also available for hire there. A petting zoo with a variety of animal species and an adventure playground are open all year round, and pony rides are also available.
