Hildebrandshausen

The small village of Hildebrandshausen lies quietly in the long valley of the Rosebach, surrounded by forests and meadows. When the Archbishop of Mainz acquired a large farm in Hildebrandshausen in 1318, the village was first mentioned in a document. At the time, it belonged to the district of Burg Stein, later Bischofstein Castle, in the neighboring village of Lengenfeld unterm Stein. The von Keudell family played an important role in the history of Hildebrandshausen. They lived not far from the village, first in Keudelstein Castle and later in Keudelstein Manor with its half-timbered castle. The more recent history of the Eichsfeld village is mainly characterized by the period after 1945. As part of the Soviet occupation zone near the Hessian border, Hildebrandshausen was located in the restricted area of the GDR. The two forced resettlements in 1952 and 1961, in which around 100 people were forcibly deprived of their homes by the GDR regime, are among the darkest chapters in the village's history. The center of the village is dominated by the "Heilig Kreuz" church, which was completed in 1869. Two of the three bells were consecrated in 2006 and have given the church bells an unmistakable sound ever since. But it is also worth taking a look inside the church. The two magnificent altars are particularly noteworthy here. They, as well as the monumental wall painting on the front wall of the nave with an area of around 40 m², adorn the interior of the church. Right next to the church is the vicarage, which was formerly used as a manor house by the von Keudell family. The carefully maintained half-timbered houses give Hildebrandshausen the character typical of the Eichsfeld region and also serve as witnesses to the village's history. For tourists, Hildebrandshausen is a good starting point for hikes through the region. A particularly popular destination is the nearby 22-metre-high Plesseturm tower, which rewards hikers with a magnificent view of the Werra valley from a height of 500 m above sea level. From there, a hike along the Kolonnenweg is recommended. As it was part of the former death strip of the inner-German border, today it is a captivating sight of nature that was untouched for decades, now known as the "Green Belt". Village life is particularly enlivened by the various clubs. The community center not only provides a backdrop for club life, but is also a popular venue for family celebrations and official events in the region.
