Georgenthal Monastery
Georgenthal Monastery
The remains of Georgenthal Monastery can be found on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest, around 16 kilometers south of Gotha. It was founded around 1140 as a Cistercian monastery. The convent experienced its heyday at the beginning of the 16th century, when the scholar Georg Spalatin taught there. All that remains of the once three-aisled columned basilica are the stumps of the columns and the remains of the walls. Nevertheless, Georgenthal Monastery is an important architectural testimony. Among other things, the so-called Kornhaus with its late Romanesque rose window bears witness to its former splendor and grandeur.
